From Optional to Essential: Why Creativity and Innovation Matter More Than Ever

One of the most vital qualities for any professional in today’s workforce is creativity and innovation. In fact, Forbes listed it among the most in-demand skills for 2024—and there’s no reason to believe that will change in 2025.

Why is it so essential? Because individuals with strong creative abilities stay open to new ideas and actively pursue fresh ways of thinking. They draw inspiration from diverse sources, consider original approaches to challenges, and embrace curiosity as a strength. They ask thoughtful questions, encourage brainstorming, and help others think more expansively. They explore new perspectives and take considered risks. They challenge accepted practices, examine long-standing assumptions, and are driven to find new, better ways of doing things.

Creative individuals are also adaptable. They view setbacks as valuable feedback—another step in the process of discovery rather than a reason to stop trying.

What’s more, creativity is contagious. Research shows that creative leaders help spark creativity in their teams. When a leader thinks outside the box, it gives others permission to do the same—creating a culture where innovation thrives.

Yet, despite the clear value of creative thinking, studies reveal that 58% of lagging organisations fail to reward creative effort. This sends a powerful message that experimentation and innovation are not valued—and it holds people back.

The Cost of A Lack of Creativity and Innovation

When creativity and innovation are missing, they show up in subtle yet damaging ways. People often grow anxious when priorities shift, feeling overwhelmed or stuck rather than curious and solution-focused. Change is met with resistance rather than openness. Teams default to familiar patterns, sticking rigidly to outdated processes even when they’re no longer effective. There’s a noticeable hesitation to take on new challenges, and when circumstances evolve, individuals struggle to adapt.

Take, for example, a marketing team facing a sudden shift in consumer behaviour. A creative team might see this as an opportunity to test fresh campaigns, experiment with new platforms, and engage differently with their audience. But without a creative mindset, the team may stick to past strategies, blame external conditions for declining engagement, and miss the chance to pivot and grow. Without creativity, forward momentum stalls. Energy fades, ideas dry up, and the organisation risks falling behind while more adaptable competitors surge ahead.

Practical Strategies to Build Creativity and Innovation

A lack of creativity and innovation—both in individuals and across organisations—comes at a cost. It limits growth, dampens motivation, and prevents teams from adapting to change. The good news is that these qualities are not fixed traits. They are competencies that develop with practice and intentional effort. Here are some proven strategies to help you strengthen them:

Tap into your full thinking capacity.

Creativity isn’t limited to logical thinking. In fact, the opposite of creativity is relying solely on analytical thought. Expand your thinking by drawing on your emotions, instincts, and intuition. Some of your best ideas will come from that initial gut feeling—if you’re willing to trust it.

Use all your senses and brainstorm freely.

When facing a challenge, give yourself permission to generate as many ideas, options, and possibilities as possible. Use visualisation, sketching, speaking out loud, or even music—whatever sparks your thinking. Don’t edit yourself during this stage. Let quantity lead to quality.

Ask bold what if” questions.

Stretch your imagination by playing with possibility. Ask questions like, “What if time or money weren’t a factor?” or “What if we did the complete opposite of what’s expected?” These questions challenge assumptions and open up fresh lines of thought.

Take intentional time out.

When your mind is constantly in demand, there’s little space left for new ideas to emerge. Stepping away—whether that means a walk, rest, or break from the task—gives your brain space to make unexpected connections. Creativity needs breathing room.

 Create space around you.

A cluttered environment often leads to a cluttered mind. Clearing your physical space helps to clear your mental space, too. Whether it’s your desk, digital files, or your schedule, a tidy environment sets the stage for clearer and more imaginative thinking.

Stay curious, always.

Make curiosity a daily habit. If something piques your interest, follow it. Read about it, ask questions, or try it out. Curiosity fuels creativity—it invites you to explore new ideas without the pressure of needing immediate outcomes.

Explore the opposite of your norm.

Deliberately step outside your comfort zone. If you’re naturally extroverted, try spending quiet time alone. If you’re detail-focused, practise viewing things from a broader perspective. By experiencing the world in new ways, you expand your creative range.

Embrace surprise daily.

Look for something each day that surprises you, challenges your thinking, or catches you off guard. Surprise disrupts your usual patterns and refreshes your perspective. When you’re open to the unexpected, you’re more likely to generate original ideas.

Creativity Is a Skill Worth Investing In

Creativity and innovation
are not reserved for artists or inventors—they are everyday tools that help professionals thrive in a world that’s constantly changing. Whether you’re leading a team, managing projects, or navigating shifting priorities, your ability to think creatively will influence how you respond, adapt, and grow.

By intentionally developing these competencies, you create more than just fresh ideas—you build a mindset that’s curious, resilient, and forward-looking. And when more individuals in a workplace think this way, it drives momentum and progress across the entire organisation.

Start small. Choose one of the strategies above and try it this week. With consistency, creativity will stop feeling like something you have to force—and start becoming part of how you operate every day.
